During this period of time, they were considered to be experts in creating locks. They would use simple locks to protect homes and properties from intruders. These locks would then be linked together in such a way as to allow easy opening of the door when the necessary code was given.

As time went by and as technology progressed, different types of locks were developed. Some of the locks developed in the early 19th century used keyed cylinders that needed to be turned to open the door. In other words, when a person used a key to enter a door, the lock had to be turned so that the person could be able to open the door. With the advancements in technology and the introduction of more complex locks, door lock manufacturers began to produce keys that did not need to be turned.

Door lock manufacturers began to make keys that required the person who would be using the key to turn it in order to open a door. The first door lock manufacturers produced keys that needed to be turned before the door would open. They called these keys, "knob" keys. The knobs themselves soon became known as "handle" keys and finally, after the switch to electronic locks was made, "key-in-knob" combinations were used.

Door lock manufacturers have come a long way since those early days. In recent years, due to the proliferation of high-tech security systems, deadbolts have been made available for more traditional doors. In addition, a wide variety of lock styles including cylinder, keyed and slide-key locks is readily available from a number of different door lock manufacturers.

The cylinder type of door lock has the advantage of requiring minimal manual opening of the door. However, this is the more problematic of the two locks styles. When a cylinder is forced open, there is a great deal of strain placed on the mechanism that holds the door closed. Also, the cylinder style locks are notorious for becoming jammed with finger-sucking pests like mice and roaches.

Keyless entry systems, also commonly called "smart locks," provide another level of security against unwanted access. These type of systems use an embedded chip or magnetic strip to provide access. Because the access code is contained in the chip or magnetic strip, these types of locks are very secure and can be used in any door without the use of a key. Typically, keyless entry systems are only effective if the door itself is locked. Even then, since the access codes can be picked by anyone with the right knowledge, it is often best to leave the key in the locked drawer. Otherwise, while the lock may be opened with a standard key, the access codes cannot be read and therefore not very effective.

It should be noted that not all door lock manufacturers make products compatible with all makes and models of household doors. Therefore, it is important to identify the manufacturer of the lock and make sure that it will work with the door lock that you own. This can be done by reading the security bar that is stamped into the door. If the security bar does not match the one engraved on your door, it is likely that it is not compatible.
